Rhinoplasty
involves the sculpturing of nose primarily by reshaping the
underlying bone and cartilage. The procedure is usually done
under general anesthesia for the patient's comfort but on an
outpatient basis. Incisions are usually made inside the nose
and the soft tissue is elevated off the bone and cartilage.
The tip of the nose is redefined by trimming and rearranging
the cartilage while the nasal bump is usually bone and is chiseled
off and reshaped. A splint is worn post-operatively for about
5-7 days. There is some bruising of the lower eyelid areas.
Many
times, patients also have their chin's augmented at the same
time as rhinoplasty. Individuals with weak chins or microgenia
will benefit from a chin augmentation. An incision is made
below the chin and a space is made over the chin. A silastic
implant is inserted over the chin bone to increase the projection.
Occasional liposuction is also done to remove the fat in the
neck. Chin augmentation increases chin projection and makes
the nose appear smaller.
