One
of the most popular areas of plastic surgery is breast augmentation.
It is performed to enhance the size and shape of the breast.
This improves a woman's ability to wear clothes and her self-esteem.
The procedure is usually performed under general anesthesia
on an outpatient basis. The implants are filled with saline
and are placed under the pectoral muscles through an incision
made in the armpit, breast fold or around the nipple. The
incision in the armpit is very popular and is performed with
an endoscope. This is a small camera that projects a picture
of the surgical site to a TV screen to assist one performing
the procedure. The armpit incision leaves no scars on the
breast. Breast implants come in all sizes and two different
shapes, round and oval (anatomical).
Some patients are better candidates for silicone implants.
Dr. Young is part of a national study that permits the use
of silicone implants under certain conditions. Many national
studies have shown that silicone implants did not cause cancer
and lead to no systemic problems.

During the past
several months, the two implant companies have developed a
new high profile implant. This means that the implant provides
more projection with a narrower base. This is a great benefit
to the thin patient with a smaller chest. Also, it appears
that these implants seem to cause less wrinkling and look
and feel more natural. The high profile saline implants have
been a welcome addition to breast augmentation. We have used
them the past six months and are very happy with the results.
